2013 Sefton’s 50+ Olympics

2013 Sefton's 50+ Olympics

Friday 27th September saw the Active Lifestyle team celebrate Older Peoples Day by hosting the 50+ Olympics for the third year running. It was great to see lots of familiar faces, and also great to welcome those who were competing for the first time. This year we had over 80 participants from all over Sefton, who were aged 50+, including one very special lady, Marjorie who celebrated her 90th birthday a few days later.

Participants warmed up, before trying their hand at games which tested them physically as well as mentally. The activities included higher or lower, card memory game, welly throwing, basketball shoot out, giant jenga, giant connect 4, quoits, bowls, golf putting, skittles, giant noughts & crosses, a penalty shoot out and an egg & spoon race. Oo’s and ah’s could be heard all around the sports hall as teams supported and cheered on each other’s success. One team could always be seen having a dance to the music in between each round of activity.

After a spot of lunch the participants were tempted by some truly scrumptious cakes baked by the Active Lifestyles team in conjunction with Macmillan’s ‘World’s Biggest Coffee Morning’. All cakes were devoured within half an hour, and we raised £66; enough for a Macmillan benefits advisor to help someone struggling with the costs of cancer.

A special thank you to Age Concern, British Lung Foundation, Sefton Alzheimer’s Society, Sefton Community Intermediate Care Team, Home Instead, LCH Public Health Team, Merseyside Police, Active Travel and Dance 4 Life. Thank you for giving up your time to support the event, and for providing quiz questions.

Our teams got together and answered 20 questions before our closing ceremony. All participants received a medal and a goody bag. Our third place team Breathe Easy North Sefton and second place team The Young One’s received certificates, whilst our winning team ‘6 Of The Best’ topped the charts and received a trophy each, before heading home.

Active Lifestyles would like to thank all staff who helped make the day a success, and most importantly thank you to our wonderful Olympians! We hope to see you all again next year.
